Bathing Beach, Parry Sound

A close up of the beach in a colourized photo from the 1930s or 1940s

  • another sunny day with a few clouds and choppy water
  • the stone high water wall is clear and wraps around parallel to the water to an area near the high dive, it appears to follow a serious rock and concrete retaining wall perhaps put in place to hold the road to the upper parking lot in place.
  • visible are the big granite steps down from the wall from the upper beach  to the lower beach
  • a parking lot marked with large stones is evidently keeping a interesting sedan from the 30s or 40s clear of the beach goers
  • a swing set and multi seat teeter totter is in active use
  • A green/gray shed is at the water’s edge at the south end of the beach
  • at the bottom right are a few of the deck planks presumably for a dock / deck leading to the water

From 1938 another colourized photo, this time much clearer than most Perhaps a different process from our friends @ PECO.

  • another sunny day, with a few horizontal clouds drawn in
  • our most clear view of the train trestle on the east side of the beach
  • chairs and benches visible on the beach
  • a mother in a long orange/pink dress standing with her child on the dock/deck that is prominent in the foreground of the picture
  • a green two door sedan is heading up the road to the High Dive area
  • Belvedere sight lines out over the North Channel are evident

The most significant change on this card is the addition of a life guard tower at the end of the extended dock leading out from the Beach House.

  • the  path/promenade created from a fair sized stone from the beach house to the dock in the previous photo appears to have been replaced
  •  several cars parked by the trestle and a few more parked at the south end of the beach
  • 2 life guards appear to be chatting in the life guard tower
  • a heavier hand with the colourization this time

The Beach and Hotel Belvedere, Parry Sound Ontario, Canada -23

A card with a date of 1923.

  • the life guard tower is back on the beach and there doesn’t appear to be a dock leading out from the beach house
  • the water level seems back up again
  • no cars visible near the beach & no train trestle visble
  • we get a good look at the front of the Beach House. It has a bench with several people sitting on either side of a dividing wall that separate the men’s and women’s change room (thanks Pete Muzzi)
  • Belvedere Hotel seems to be floating in the air.
