Of course we are talking about the Old Town Beach at the bottom of Waubuno Road, not the new town beach at Waubuno Park.

A current overhead view from early 2017 shows

  • Waubuno Road travelling down to the beach, from the top/centre-right
  • The Coast Guard base in the top left of the image
  • The High Dive and parking area and now Sail Parry Sound at the bottom left of centre
  • the old railway track, now an exercise/walking path cutting from the bottom of the image through the centre of the photo disappearing into the trees by the coast guard base
  • Belvedere Heights, Belvedere Avenue and buildings close to the historic site of the Belvidere/Belvedere Hotel.
  • All of the buildings, the Beach House, Bath House, change shacks etc appear to be removed from this image
  • Much of the stone pier work to the north and south of the beach also is now absent or obscured

A Note on the Belvedere Hotel

I have no deep insight on what the correct spelling of the Hotel above the beach should be. I have, however, tried to be consistent within a description of a Postcard – for example – if a Postcard mentions the Belvidere Hotel – I’ll stick with that spelling for the duration of our discussion on that particular card.

Opinions vary  on whether this is helpful. A unsatisfying summary of Hotel naming conventions here.

Also, I haven’t included any of the great closeup photos of Belvidere or of the view from Belvidere. I have, however, included a few choice Postcards showing Belvidere from distance for two reasons:

  • Some Belvidere postcards provide unique views of the beach, facing south/north and east.
  • other cards from Belvidere that were shot from the water give us additional detail about the buildings surrounding the beach

But no closeups of the Hotel – you need to draw the line somewhere.
